Janess Anne Nimrod was born on January 8, 1952 in Good Hope, Guyana, South America. She was the youngest of three children born to the late John Abraham Nimrod and Marietta Wilhelmina Nimrod (Bury). Her two siblings, Joycelyn Angus and Dr. Carl Nimrod, preceded her in death. Janess Anne was dedicated as a child and initially raised in the Presbyterian Church. Later, she joined the Pilgrim Holiness Church (now Wesleyan Church), where she heard the gospel proclaimed and responded by giving her heart to the Lord at the age of fifteen. Upon completion of her primary school education, she enrolled at Central High School in Georgetown, where she excelled; attaining seven subjects in the GCE “O” level exam and awarded with a high school diploma. Upon graduation, she found employment as a pupil teacher, with Saint Phillip’s Anglican School for a period of one year.
In December 1969, Rev. Nimrod joined close family members upon migration to the United States. She obtained immediate employment with AT&T in 1970 as an international telephone operator. During her five years of service with this organization, she was able to attend Hunter College from which she graduated with a Bachelor’s of Arts degree, “cum laude” in Sociology. Her family referred to her as a “permanent student” because of her appetite for learning. She would later complete a second Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, two Master’s degrees in Guidance/Counseling, and in Education, as well as a doctorate degree in Psychology with a concentration and Educational Leadership. Upon retirement in 2015, she brought to a close her secular career after serving 16 years as a disability analyst with New York State.
However, what truly defined Janess Anne Nimrod was God‘s call upon her life to serve as an ordained elder in the church of the Nazarene. After several years of ministerial preparation, she was ordained as an elder in 1998. She served God and the Beulah Church of the Nazarene faithfully for over 25 years. Like the Apostle Paul, Janess Anne had a passion for the Lord’s work. She was driven by God‘s love and providence in her life, bringing her to a pivotal point of commitment and surrender to His will. She was truly humbled and mesmerized about God using her to build His kingdom. At the Beulah Church, she served as an Associate Pastor for Christian Education, training, and members’ development. She also served as president of the Willing Workers’ group for many years, also as Sunday School, teacher and superintendent, Converts’ class teacher, Small groups’ trainer, in addition to her ministerial role as preacher, counselor, Bible study teacher and visiting clergy member to other Nazarene churches and denominations. Rev. Anne also served as the director of the GED (TASC) Program at Beulah, for over ten years. She carried out her responsibilities with diligence, willingness, and with joy, encouraging others, sharing her knowledge, expertise, and compassion to develop persons educationally, socially, and spiritually.
In addition, Rev. Anne served the Church of the Nazarene on a district level as a member of the District Advisory Board, Board of Ministry, and Instructor for the Palmer Institute. She often attended General Assemblies, USA/CANADA Mid Quadrennial Missions and Evangelism Conferences and PALCON.
She was truly happy to be “in the service of the King.” However, she found time for travel and relaxation, visiting many islands in the Caribbean, cities in North America, Alaska, Europe, South Africa, and Israel. Her life was one that was well lived, with a sense of purpose and accountability. While Rev. Anne was predeceased by her sister Joycelyn Angus, brother Dr. Carl Nimrod, mother Marietta Nimrod, and nephew Paul Nimrod; she leaves to mourn her loss: nieces Jacqueline, Sandra, Carleen, Sherrie, and Sharon; nephews-in-law, Rev. Brendan Whitton, Raul Van Rossum and Brian Licorish of New York; great nieces and great nephews: Gabrielle, Jonathan, Christina, Micah, Shiloh and Arianna; sister-in-law, Noreen Martin Nimrod, many cousins, other relatives and friends.
“On that bright and cloudless morning.
When the dead in Christ shall rise,
And the glory of His resurrection share.
When the Saints of God shall gather
To their home beyond the skies,
And the roll is called up yonder,”
She’ll be there!
Sleep on now, “Auntie J”, “Cousin Anne”; Rev. Nimrod take your rest. We’ll see you in the morning!
In honor, of Rev. Dr. Nimrod, please consider continuing her legacy of generosity and love in action through donation to her favorite charities.
