Dorothea Thompson-Manning, affectionately known to her close family and friends as Dolly, was born December 3, 1943, in Jersey City, New Jersey to the late John and Eartha Williams.
Dorothea was educated in the Jersey City public school system and had a lifelong love of learning. She would further her education and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from New Jersey City University and a Masters of Science in Urban Policy and Management from the New School.
Dorothea held several managerial positions over her 27-year career at the Port Authority of NY/NJ including Senior Audit Supervisor, Management Recruiter, and Senior Confidential Investigator. She has received countless accolades including Black Achiever in Industry, Outstanding Contributor – Institute of Internal Auditors, and the Human Resources Director Team Achievement Award.
In 1990, Dorothea met Carl Manning. They fell in love and after a two-year courtship married in 1992. On July 11, 2022, Dorothea and Carl celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary.
Dorothea loved her community and when she moved to Brooklyn, she worked tirelessly to contribute to her neighborhood and was actively involved in several organizations. Dorothea was elected by the shareholders to serve on the Clinton Hill Co-op Board of Directors. She served for eight years and for five years as President. She was a Board Member of Community Board 2 Brooklyn, a Member of Hill, and a Member of the Women’s Ministry at Brown Memorial Baptist Church.
One of Dorothea’s favorite activities was to mentor students and younger professionals in her role as First Vice President of the New York Coalition of 100 Black Women. She was a member of various Coalition chapters for over 30 years. In recent years, she looked forward to awarding scholarship dollars to talented young women in partnership with L’Oreal and creating enrichment programs to successfully launch women into careers.
When not creating life-changing programs, Dorothea and Carl loved to travel. They could often be found cruising to countless islands including the Bahamas, Aruba, Jamaica, Bermuda, and the Dominican Republic to name a few. They could also be found at their favorite hotels enjoying the fun and entertainment of Atlantic City.
After a prolonged illness, on August 17, 2022, Dorothea was called to reside in the house of her Lord. She was the beloved wife of Carl Manning and loving mother to Geanine Thompson and Michael Thompson. Dorothea was a caring sister to Johnnie Williams (Ada Williams) and devoted Aunt to John Kevin Williams (deceased). She was also a cherished stepmother to Veronica Manning-Weathers (William Weathers Senior) and doting grandmother to Hykiem Manning William Weathers Jr. and Trea Weathers. She is also survived by a lovely community of family and friends.
