“My name is Barbra Wright and I’m a trooper. “ Those were the exact words Barbara, our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, told her doctors to remind them of the tremendous spirit they were treating. Barbara was definitely a “Trooper.”
“Why should I feel discouraged?
And why should the shadows come?”
Barbara, the oldest of four, was born and raised in Brooklyn on July 24, 1944. Barbara lived with her grandmother and helped raise the younger siblings and cousins. Barbara was always a caretaker who took in and took care of so many children – all of them as if they were her own.
“Why should my heart feel lonely?
And long for heavenly home?”
If you knew Barbara, you know she truly loved to feed people. It is at this time of year, she would be planning Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving was Barbara’s day! Barbara would literally bring you two plates to ensure you had a taste of everything. While she fed your soul, Barbara also nurtured your spirit. She was full of wisdom and had the uncanny ability to be nonjudgmental. Barbara encouraged you to think about your choices and showed you how to believe in and be yourself. Barbara was open arms. She’d give, give and give of herself, never once complaining when she didn’t get anything in return.
“When Jesus is my portion?
A constant friend is He”
Over the years, as Barbara’s health declined, the family’s heartfelt appreciation is extended to the teams of medical staff who cared for her in her time of need.
“His eye is on the sparrow
and I know he watches me.”
In testament and celebration of her life, Barbara leaves: her mother, Evelyn, siblings Joyce and Samuel; her children: Lamont, Sandra, Lioness, Charissa, Shartika, Sharneka, Willie, and Kiara (Jackie); seven grandchildren: Christopher, Kimberly (Nikki), Lance, Kimani, Kiarah, DeAnte, and Khylil; three great-grandchildren: Jacob, Nia and Noah; and a host of loving cousins and friends (the Family we choose).
“I sing because I’m happy.
I sing because I’m free.
His eye is on the sparrow.
And I know he watches me.”
